Mark Magennis - Hip Resurfacing Surgery performed by Dr. Vijay Bose.
Aloha Dr.Bose,
My post op update:
I have had a remarkable experience as I have had no problems at all.I have been a bit conservative with my exercises but as of last week I walk atleat two or three miles on the beach daily.I have never had pain or swelling since the surgery.Iam able to stand up straight and all my friends think Iam taller! I have actually become something of a local celebrity as people come up to me and tell me how much Iam improving. One man yesterday said "I can't believe it...you look normal!"
My local doctors are extremely impressed.
Iam still excercising with crutches in the morning as Iam trying to rid myself of my previous limp.I walk with perfect posture for approximately 100 yards and then do my leg exercises.I repeat this three times,My limp is 85 percent gone.I will keep you updated.
I miss everyone at your hospital, they are absolutely the cutting edge of competent compassionate health care.Thank you again for a wonderful experience.
Sincerely,
Mark Magennis - USA,25.10.10

Dr.G.R.B is the Superintendent of a Missionary Hospital in Shimla. He leads medical teams to out reach clinics in remote villages in the difficult snow filled mountain terrain, sometimes having to carry heavy supplies on the shoulder for hours together. He opted to have Birmingham Hip Resurfacing when he developed arthritis of his right hip. He feels his pursuits to take modern medical care to remote villages have become more intense after the Birmingham Hip Resurface(BHR) Surgery.

Dr .William Cory Foulk - Ironman Triathlon Competitor.

The World Championships is held in Kailua Kona, Hawaii each October. This was the third Ironman distance triathlon I attempted this year (post-op); I failed to finish the first in July due to dehydration (that was in Frankfurt, Germany, and is the European Championship) but had a very good bike and a pretty good run going. The second was in Honolulu, Hawaii two weeks later, in August 2006, and I not only finished but won my division and qualified for the World Championships.
The hip is significantly better than it has been for years - absolutely no pain, a much better range of motion - as you can see from the cycling photo, you have to bring your knee to your chest 80 times per minute - for 6 hours! I am noticing much better power as the tendons seem to finally be recovering from years of chaffing across that joint. Great news!
I have been invited to compete in the Ultraman World Championships the last weekend of November, and expect to place in the top ten overall in that event, which is longer then a regular Ironman triathlon. I feel confident that I will be on equal footing with the other competitors throughout.
Thank you again for your efforts in getting me here, Aloha, Cory.
This is the 2006 Ironman World Championships held October 21, 2006 - 10 months to the day of my procedure!
I had a wonderful time all day, and had no difficulty completing the distances of 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles bicycling, and 26.2 miles running, despite difficult weather conditions throughout the day. My time was 90 minutes faster than last years time, despite the fact that i was taking it very easy so as to not undo any of your fine handiwork!
I expect next year to be back as competitive as I ever was, with absolutely no concession to the BHR hip. I had absolutely no pain before, during, or after this event.
Thank you again for correcting a once debilitating condition, Aloha, Cory.

I underwent Hip Resurfacing surgery with Dr. Vijay C. Bose on September 10, 2007. I am extremely satisfied with the results of my surgery and have returned to an active lifestyle with no residual pain or discomfort whatsoever. Following is a brief history of my condition and how I came to require the services of Dr. Bose and his dedicated team.
Peter F. Koenig - Motocross Bike Professional.
I am an active 48 year old man engaged in a number of sports that require good hips, including Bicycling, Motocross, Kiteboarding (similar to Windsurfing) and Skiing . I began to experience pain in my left hip approximately 10 years ago. The pain was intermittent in the early years and usually followed vigorous exercise. I was diagnosed with the early stages of osteoarthritis in my hips and was told that I should minimize high-impact sports, lose weight and wait until the pain became intolerable then seek a Hip Replacement Surgery . In early 2005 the pain in my left hip became substantially more acute, to the point that I was walking with a limp at all times, and experiencing almost constant pain.
After several visits to Orthopedic Surgeons based in the U.S., I was told to seek Hip Replacement Surgery. Through independent research on the internet I was introduced to the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) procedure, which appeared to be a better solution for me as a relatively young and physically active patient (there are many reasons for this, but for purposes of this letter I will assume the reader knows of the inherent benefits of BHR over Traditional Hip Replacements for younger patients). As BHR surgery is a relatively new procedure in the U.S., I was encouraged to seek a doctor outside the U.S. who had substantial experience with the procedure. Through the course of my research, the names of several physicians kept appearing as the worldwide "Leaders" in the field, one of whom was Dr. Vijay C Bose. I initiated contact with Dr. Bose in 2005, and sent him a CD with x-ray images of my hips. He indicated that I was a good candidate for the procedure and should seek to obtain the surgery as soon as the pain became intolerable. I waited two more years and ultimately arranged for my surgery with Dr. Bose in September 2007.

The experience of traveling to India for a major medical procedure was daunting at first for someone coming from the U.S., but I was able to communicate with several of Dr. Bose former patients who assured me that I would be well cared for and in good hands. In the end, this proved to be the case as I felt completely comfortable while under the care of Dr. Bose and his Dedicated Team at the Apollo Hospital Chennai. From the coordination of my travel plans with the International Patient Coordinator Mr. Mohan to the medical care provided by Dr. Bose and his staff, I was Completely Satisfied with my experience at the hospital and with the outcome of the procedure.
It is now still Less than a Year since I had the BHR procedure and I have returned to all the physical activities I enjoyed prior to my Hip Pain. I don't think about my hip much at all anymore - It is Cured

Kim Reiser had her Hip Resurfacing in chennai. She has the following to report by e-mail
I continue to be excited and thankful about my progress. At the end of week 4, I was hiking at the edge of the wilderness again and doing stream crossings in the crystal clean mountain water. (photo attached) During the 6th week, my hiking time was up to 8 hours on relatively easy terrain along the headwaters of the Dearborn river. My quads and hamstrings are building strength daily and the ROM is almost back to normal. I still am challenged by a full squat but I keep working on it each day using props for support.
I don't tire of telling you how grateful I am to be walking again and to be able to enjoy the restorative beauty of the Montana mountains--it's absolutely terrific!
I passed my physical exam for entry into the RN program with flying colors. The doctor was amazed at my quick recovery and declared me top fit for clinical rotations. Now just one more year to go and I'll transitions from an LPN to an RN and then hope to work on the med/surg floor in the veterans hospital here in Helena.
I hope all is well with you and the staff at the Apollo hospital - http://www.hipresurfacingindia.com Kindly pass along my fond regards.
Sincerely,
Kim Rieser Helena, MT
